Sometimes I get questions about what my role as Principal is like from a day to day, or a weekly basis. I am writing this blog after a 7:00 to 4:30 day at a very successful DW Poppy Car Show this Sunday. This annual event involved over 800 vintage cars from throughout the Lower Mainland as well as vendors, food, and amazing donations. It also involved close to 70 parent and student volunteers, and thousands of spectators. We raised thousands of dollars for DW Poppy Programs. The Car show culminated what was a very busy week at DW Poppy.
On Monday, the DW Poppy School Community welcomed Canadian journalist and military historian Gwynne Dyer. Gwynne mesmerized over 200 students and staff members as he discussed world politics and national history. Unfortunately, I got to attend a 4 hour budget meeting at the Board Office during his presentation…It is that time of year again ... I was told that Mr. Dyer's presentation was much more exciting than my meeting.
On Tuesday, we were fortunate to have our visiting director and several dignitaries from Patumwa School in Thailand. DW Poppy had twelve students who were on a three week program with us from Thailand. They have been a wonderful addition to DW Poppy.

I also had a chance to take in the DW Poppy Senior Boys’ Rugby game. They had a very big win against Abby Senior. It was nice to see them beat the school that I graduated from in such a decisive fashion.
On Wednesday I participated in the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement Signing at Aldergrove Secondary with feeder schools from the Aldergrove and Poppy region as well as key representatives from Kwantlen First Nations. This was followed by a spectacular event on the Friday, May 1 Professional Development Day where I was able to participate in the Kwantlen Salmon Ceremony with several staff members from Poppy as well as many of our Aboriginal students. DW Poppy has a strong relationship with Kwantlen First Nations and our entire aboriginal community. I was proud of Ms. Jack and our Poppy student drummers for their amazing presentation.

Then on Friday evening it was off to ACSS once again to participate in Thai Night were we had our final celebrations with our visiting Students.
On Saturday I got to stop in and see Rory Allen and Greig Leino as they continue to create the amazing legacy called the Greig Leino Alumni Basketball Tournament which raises funds for Graduating students from DW Poppy. It is amazing to see decades of athletes from over thirty years ago come with their children and talk about what DW Poppy meant to their family. It is truly inspirational and speaks to the long standing investment that our staff and students have in our wonderful school.
What a fabulous week of activity at DWP.
