Welcome back everyone!! We are excited to be back at DW Poppy and celebrating our special school. One of the things that I love about DW Poppy is how invested our staff are in our school. Mr. Harrison is a Science and Math Teacher at DW Poppy, but his work extends beyond the classroom. He volunteers to support Student Government, coaches Cross Country and Track and will work with students before, at lunch and after school. Please see Mr. Harrison's welcome to our Grade 8 parents below. It is just one example of what is great about being here.
Dear Parents,
DW Poppy is a community, one in which your child will be part of for the next 5 years. I am hopeful that these will be a great 5 years for your child. I will do my best to make it so for your child.
School is so much more than the courses we take and subjects we learn. Reflecting back on my (long ago) high school days, I remember the activities I took part in far more than the actual courses. To that end, I am encouraging your child to get involved in something here at DW Poppy.
Whether it is a sport, a club, the choir, or some other of the many ongoings here at Poppy, just get involved. They will feel far more involved in the school, it will become part of their life and will help make these 5 years go so quickly. They will make new friends and stretch their boundaries just a little bit.
We've often been described as the Little Country School that does so much. We offer a full range of sports, comparable to and competitive with our much larger city cousins. Cross-country, volleyball, swimming and boys soccer are all up and running. It's not too late to join any of these sports.
Student Leadership is also an excellent way to get involved in helping to form the Poppy Pride -- We don't just go to school, We go to Poppy. Dances, Spirit Days, Pep Rallies and other such activities are planned through Student Leadership. Students from all grades are welcome to participate in setting this tone and Grade 8s are especially encouraged to do so. We meet on Thursdays at lunch in Mrs. Cook's room (Rm 129)
Global Voices is a group of students of all grades who are interested in both world and local community issues. Many fundraisers for both local and world issues are planned and run by the Global Voices group. They meet on Tuesday's at lunch in Mrs. Cook's room and Grade 8s are encouraged to join.
Redhawk Voices is a choir comprised of students of all ages. Talk to Mr. Ablitt about the meeting / rehearsal times. They perform at many school and community events.
Ms. Jack, our Aboriginal Support Worker, runs a Redhawk Drummers club Thursdays after school. ALL students are welcome to participate. They too, perform at many school and community events.
There are many other clubs and activities that run throughout the year -- keep your eyes open for further information. There is something for everyone here at Poppy. Please encourage your child to get involved. They will be so glad they did and Grad 2019 will be upon them before they know it.
I hope this helps. Thanks for your support.
