Langley School District is excited to be hosting our 2nd Annual EdCamp35 here in Langley on Saturday April 18th at RE Mountain Secondary School. For those who went last year (or have been to any EdCamp) you know it is an energizing day of connecting and learning from all stakeholders in education. This un-conference allows participants to bring forth educational topics that are of interest to them, sparking deep conversations on how to make learning better for all our students. Last year we had teachers, support staff, students, admin, parents, district leadership and trustees from several districts come together to ignite and/or continue to fuel their passion for learning. Please check out www.edcamp35.com to see what an EdCamp is and to register.
Possible Closure of Langley Secondary School
As the community is aware, since October 2014 the Langley School District has been involved in a consultation process with the Willoughby community and the Langley Secondary family of schools. At the December 16, 2014 meeting of the Board a notice of motion was served to consider the possible closure of Langley Secondary School as part of this consultation process. In considering a school closure, the Board of Education must follow the procedures prescribed in Policy No. 5029. This policy includes holding a required public meeting and a 60 day consultation period. A public meeting is being held at Langley Secondary School on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 7:00pm to gather information from the community about the impacts of the potential closing of the school. The 60 day consultation period will be completed February 14, 2015. As such, the Board of Education will not be in a position to decide on a Long Term Facilities Plan recommendation at the Regular Meeting of the Board on January 27, 2015 as previously indicated. The Board will instead hold a Public Special Meeting on February 17, 2015 at 7:00pm at the School Board Office to address the possible closure of Langley Secondary in accordance with Policy No. 5029. A decision on a Long Term Facilities Plan business case recommendation will be made only after the LSS closure is considered. Written presentations and requests for oral presentations (speakers will be provided a five minute time limit) at the February 10th public meeting will be received after Monday, February 2nd at: Office of the Secretary Treasurer 4875 222 Street, Langley, BC V3A3Z7 Or via email: [email protected] This is a reminder of the PAC Meeting tomorrow night, January 19 at 7pm in the school library. We encourage all parents to attend.

The Board of Education has recently approved a newly updated policy that strives to protect students from harassment and discrimination. With its introduction, school communities have an opportunity to educate students about inclusion and respect for all individuals. In keeping with building a positive school culture and climate, this policy provides a framework for fostering social responsibility in Langley Schools.
A portion of Policy No. 7200 reads: Any communication or behaviour (which may include but is not limited to assault, bullying or harassment) that deliberately degrades, denigrates, labels, stereotypes, incites hatred, prejudice and discrimination towards students on the basis of one’s real or perceived sexual or gender orientation, appearance, capacity, disability, ethnicity or religion, or for any other reason, will not be tolerated. This also includes making gestures, publishing or displaying anything that would indicate an intention to discriminate against an individual or group, or expose them to contempt or ridicule. All members of the school community, including students, staff, parents/guardians, volunteers and trustees are expected to uphold this policy in the interest of student safety and well-being.
